Some Special Places in Pncima

Nakwakto Rapids and Turret Rock

The Guinness Book of World Records lists the Nakwakto Rapids as having the strongest currents in the world. These rapids are caused by an enormous amount of seawater squeezing through a sliver of a channel during tidal exchanges. The surrounding Seymour Inlet area consists of glacier-carved waterways with 950 miles of shoreline. When all of this water makes its way to and from the Pacific Ocean, the Nakwakto Rapids can rip around Turret Rock, which sits smack in the middle of the churning currents, at 16 knots.

The Scott Islands
The Scott Islands are rocky, windy, and remote. These five uninhabited islands are home to some of the most important bird colonies in B.C. with over two million seabirds nesting there annually. Ninety percent of Canada’s hardy tufted puffins breed here where it is often impossible to land a boat and winds have been known to reach hurricane strength.

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site

Established in 1993, the Government of Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation entered into a unique arrangement to manage this special cultural and natural wonder. Hundreds of generations of Haida have been nourished by the rich abundance of this place where the sea and the islands provide all the essential ingredients for sustenance and growth. The waters are rich with life hosting numerous marine species and the spring migration route of the grey whales passes here on the way to summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea. There is a proposed Gwaii Haanas Marine Conservation Area which when established will make this one of the few places in the world that is protected from the tops of the mountains to the sea floor.

McPherson Point
Located on Langara Island at the northern tip of Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). This unique are is where five different ocean currents reportedly converge. Abundant fish stocks attract fishermen, sea birds and marine mammals including orcas and sea lions.
