Pncima - A Bountiful Sea

The emergence of Pncima as we know it occurred with the rising of sea level since the last glaciation, and most or all of this process occurred in the presence of First Nations people. This is a deep and old connection. First Nations people have lived off the ocean’s bounty since time immemorial and coastal fishing communities have called these waters home for generations. The people here live in villages, resource towns, places with history. These places share a strong sense of identity from their common bond.

The ocean supports fishers and loggers, aquaculturists and whale watchers. There are also ship builders and marine technicians, scientists and artists. Many who rely on Pncima’s waters live or work here and others depend upon the ocean for transportation and recreation. Below the surface, the waters of Pncima support an even greater diversity of life, hidden from the everyday observer. Under the wild sea, corals and sponges blanket the rocks, anemones and sea stars thrive in crevices, and hundreds of fish swim in underwater seascapes. Anyone who has traveled through or lived in the Pacific North Coast can appreciate the incredible diversity and abundance of life that this diverse ecosystem supports. All Canadians benefit from the wide variety of social, economic and ecological services provided by this region.

These waters are fundamental to the lives of many - and this is why those who are impacted by decisions made about Pncima must embrace their opportunity to become involved in managing Pncima for the long term.
